Printed Details and Stories of Myth and Legend by Tom Kindley

Tom Kindley’s mythology-inspired comics and prints are put together with a creative use of detail and shading. In this way, he builds mysterious worlds and intriguing landscapes. We take a closer look to see what we find there.

As great as they look online, it’s immediately obvious that Tom’s work is the kind that needs to be picked up and held in your hands. Apart from the various books comics he makes being their own art pieces that you would like to check out up close, the textures and areas of detail that Tom uses give them an inviting tactile quality.

He really embraces the aesthetics that are associated with printing, and involves them in his style in a really successful way. You can almost smell the ink on the page, something he goes on to tell us is a satisfying part of his work.

I am a Newcastle-based illustrator currently working from home. Most of my work is influenced by ancient mythology but I get my narratives by delving into personal experience. This way I can keep my source material relevant.

I start off a piece by sketching out a composition with a coloured pencil. I am a sucker for geometry so I always have a grid that I like to work to. It helps bring a uniformed quality to my illustrations. A lot of erasing and redrawing happens before I commit to inking.

The inking consists of me hunched over a light box with either a biro or a hard black pencil. While tracing over the initial sketch I like to add intuitive details, it keeps me creative in what can become a monotonous part of the process.

I find that the finished line drawings can look quite complicated so I clean them up by adding in different tones. I am currently working with watercolours but in the past I’ve done everything in halftone on Photoshop.

Whether though silk screen, risograph or digital, my work is realised best when it is printed. I especially like the smell of fresh ink on new paper.
